  • Charley Hoffman Wins Deutsche Bank Championship; Tiger Finishes 11th

Filed under: PGA, FedEx CupNORTON, Mass. (AP) -- Charley Hoffman made 11 birdies, and that was more than enough to win the Deutsche Bank Championship. Hoffman ran off four straight birdies early to make up a four-shot deficit, and he kept right on going Monday on the TPC Boston. He closed with a 9-under 62 to win the second playoff event and go to No. 2 in the FedEx Cup standings. He won for the first time in three years, although it might have been too late to get one of the Ryder Cup picks. U.S. captain Corey Pavin will announce his selections Tuesday.

  • Svetlana Kuznetsova Upset at US Open

Filed under: U.S. Open, WTANEW YORK -- Dominika Cibulkova, ranked No. 45 in the world, advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open with a surprise 7-5, 7-6(4) victory over 11th-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova. "I know my game and I know myself, so I knew I could make it; I could beat everybody in this tournament," said Cibulkova. "I was just waiting for a moment, and I'm happy it's here. Before rebounding to dominate the tiebreaker, the unseeded Cibulkova blew a 5-3 lead with two match points in the second set. The experienced Kuznetsova fought back and Cibulkova showed a case of nerves. However, in the tiebreaker, Kuznetsova double-faulted to trail 5-1 and could never mount a comeback. In the quarterfinals, Cibulkova will face the winner of the late Monday afternoon fourth-round match between top seed Caroline Wozniacki and No. 14 seed Maria Sharapova. Cibulkova showed plenty of grit in Monday's match, receiving treatment for a hip injury during the first set. Her previous best result at the U.S. Open was an appearance in the third round in 2008. Kuznetsova won the U.S. Open in 2004 and was runner-up in 2007. Those were the only previous times in her career that she advanced to the quarterfinals. She had lost one set in the tournament's first three rounds -- in the first round to 39-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm. tweetcount_src = 'RT @FanHouse:'; tweetcount_via = false; tweetcount_size = 'small'; tweetcount_background = 'FFFFFF'; tweetcount_border = 'CCCCCC'; tweetcount_api_key = '1cf4e3b7f7f20406a9dd9d1b1edc0e41b4fc20d1b21cb19a6f169387c696d333'; "I didn't feel good today," said Kuznetsova. "I was very flat. It was very hard for me to play one night second night match, and then in one day to play at 11:00. I mean, I still have to play and win today, doesn't matter what, because I feel that my level is so much better. But I was just fighting with myself and was not doing all the time the things I was supposed to do. Still, it's not an excuse. I still have to win."

  • Patrick McEnroe to Step Down as US Davis Cup Captain

Filed under: Davis Cup, ATPPatrick McEnroe will be resigning as captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team after this month's World Group playoff in Colombia. In a statement released by McEnroe and the USTA on Monday at the U.S. Open, he noted, "It is with a heavy heart that I am resigning as Davis Cup captain, but it is a decision I felt was best for the team and myself right now," said McEnroe, who led the U.S. team to the title in 2007. "Davis Cup is a significant time commitment and this decision will allow me to focus more energy on my family and to the USTA Player Development program." In addition to player development, McEnroe will also focus on his work as a tennis analyst with ESPN. McEnroe is currently the USTA's general manager of player development, a post he has held since 2008. McEnroe has been the captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team since 2001, leading the Americans to the Cup title in 2007 against Russia in Portland, Ore. It was the first title for the United States since 1995, ending a record-long drought. He is the longest-tenured Davis Cup captain, compiling a 16-9 career record - second only to Tom Gorman's 18 wins. The United States Davis Cup team was ousted in the first round this March against Serbia on clay in Belgrade. They will be playing in Colombia in the World Group playoffs from Sept. 17-19, in attempt to keep their top-tier status in the tournament.

  • Samantha Stosur Downs Dementieva in Record-Setting Match at US Open

Filed under: U.S. Open, WTASamantha Stosur made a comeback for the ages in her fourth-round U.S. Open match against 12th-seeded Elena Dementieva. The fifth-seeded Stosur defeated Dementieva in a three-set match that ended later than any women's match in U.S. Open history. Stosur needed two hours, 38 minutes to score a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(2) victory, capping off the win at approximately 1:35 a.m. ET Monday morning at Flushing Meadows. "When everyone stays out here and cheers and supports us like that, it couldn't be any better," 2010 French Open runner-up Stosur said in an on-court interview in Arthur Ashe Stadium. In arguably the most competitive women's match so far in the tournament, Stosur staved off four match points in the third set to stay alive. Eventually, Stosur found a way to advance into her first-ever U.S. Open quarterfinal by staying mentally strong as Dementieva faltered -- Dementieva lost seven of nine tiebreaker points in the decisive set. "I think we both played a great match. Went for it and gave it our best," Stosur said. "To have a match like that here is just fantastic." Long before that, Stosur started the contest out strongly, hitting her big forehand to perfection as she took the first set, 6-3. But Dementieva rallied back and stole momentum with a second-set victory.
