- Kansas City will use Williams in pass-rushing situations
KANSAS CITY, Mo. —Demorrio Williams had the idea two weeks ago: If the Chiefs were going to use him sometimes as a pass rusher, why not look the part, too? So the veteran inside linebacker approached Kansas City's coaches and asked them to watch as he lined up with his hand on the ground, similar to a down lineman, and went after the quarterback. "They gave me an opportunity," he said. "Felt pretty good, you know?"Looked pretty good, too. Coaches liked Williams enough as a sub-rusher that they used him in that role in Thursday's preseason finale against Green Bay, a 17-13 Chiefs victory. Williams had a sack in that contest, his third in two preseason games, and his performance has been enough to make coaches think they've found a surprising complement to outside linebacker Tamba Hali.Read more

- Venus struggles, wins at U.S. Open
NEW YORK — Venus Williams struggled with her serve. She kept tugging at her dress. Every bit as big a nuisance was her opponent, Shahar Peer.On a Sunday afternoon in which Kim Clijsters and Rafael Nadal cruised to their victories at the U.S. Open, third-seeded Williams never looked quite comfortable in hers. She defeated the 16th-seeded Peer 7-6 (3), 6-3 on the second straight windy day in Arthur Ashe Stadium.Williams got only 48 percent of her first serves in. She faced six break points and lost three. She squandered five chances to wrap up the first set in a 22-point 12th game. As for the dress — a red "daytime" version of the black, sequined number she wore two nights previously — well, she spent much of the match tugging at it to keep it at barely high-thigh level.Read more
- KU offense looks for answers
LAWRENCE — One quarterback kept his answers short but said that his confidence would not be shattered by Kansas' 6-3 loss to North Dakota State. The other couldn't stop talking and effused positive vibes about the rest of the season. The reason for the difference in tone was obvious: Starter Kale Pick had been pulled from the game by his coaches, and backup Jordan Webb was sent in on a rescue mission. Webb ultimately failed, too, but he only had 11 minutes to get the job done. On Saturday night, he sounded like a guy who wanted more time. "Quarterback is a position unlike any other in sports," Webb said. "I'm definitely going to step up as a leader. I think the guys look at me as a leader. When I came in, everybody was in my face. They were really excited to see what I could do. Hopefully, what I showed tonight is enough to get some confidence from other people as well." Read more
