- Harrah's drops bid for Sumner Co. casino
Harrah's once again has snubbed Sumner County after a long flirtation. The Vegas giant yanked its application to build a $260 million casino near Mulvane on Wednesday, just a few hours before it was to make a presentation to the Kansas Lottery Commission.That left the commission to consider proposals from just two casino companies. It approved contracts for both: Global Gaming Partners' plans for the Wellington turnpike exit and Peninsula Gaming Partners' plans for the Mulvane turnpike exit.The contracts will be sent to a seven-member casino review board, which will have 60 days to select the winner.Read more
- Decision clears Hartman to enter race as Libertarian
TOPEKA — The Secretary of State's Office denied an objection to a Libertarian's withdrawal from the 4th Congressional District race Wednesday, clearing the way for businessman Wink Hartman to run instead.The office determined there was no basis in state law for one person to object to a candidate's declaration of incapability, said Tyler Longpine, spokesman for Secretary of State Chris Biggs.David Moffett, who had been the party's pick, filed a statement with the Secretary of State's Office on Sept. 2, declaring he was "incapable of fulfilling the duties of the office if elected."Read more
- Standoff closes streets, school
A man upset about his health and talking about wanting it to "be over with" prompted authorities to close surrounding streets and place a nearby school on lockdown for a short time Wednesday afternoon in west Wichita.The man, who is in his 50s, did not directly threaten anyone, Wichita police Lt. Guy Schroeder said, but authorities became concerned when he indicated he had several weapons in his house and had access to them in the 400 block of North Pamela, near Maple and Tyler.Authorities were notified just after 2 p.m. when the man called the center where he had been receiving treatment.Read more

Intrust Bank Arena took a loss of about $60,000 in July, which county officials had anticipated with the slow-down of performances in the summer.Assistant County Manager Ron Holt told commissioners Wednesday that many tour groups take the summer off. And he emphasized that the loss was less than expected.The arena hosted two public events in July — concert performances by REO Speedwagon and Pat Benatar, and Rascal Flatts.Read more
