  • After serving 11 years in prison, man's conviction overturned

    Nathaniel Swenson walked away from prison a day after his 32nd birthday, having served 11 years for a crime he said he didn't commit. Swenson, then 21, was convicted in Wichita of attempted murder in 2000. For the next decade, he protested his innocence, even when he felt no one listened."It took so long to be able to get someone to hear my word," Swenson said this week.After seven years of arguments and legal briefs, the Kansas Court of Appeals last spring ruled that Swenson didn't get an adequate defense from his trial lawyer.Read more

  • Longtime Wichita dance instructor dies at home

    Julie Keeling taught dance and touched lives.That's how most people will remember the dance instructor who died unexpectedly Thursday at her home in Wichita. She was 52.Ms. Keeling, who graduated from Kansas State University in 1980 with a degree in physical education, taught ballet, tap and jazz for 30 years at a studio in her home on North Cypress. Her students ranged from age 3 to 18.Read more

  • Judge overturns Nebraska flag-mutilation law challenged by Phelps church

    OMAHA — A federal judge overturned Nebraska's ban on flag mutilation Thursday, clearing the way for protesters from a Kansas church to continue trampling on the U.S. flag when they protest at military funerals.The ruling from U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf said the law can't be applied as long as Megan Phelps-Roper and fellow members of the Westboro Baptist Church "otherwise act peacefully while desecrating the American or Nebraska flag during their religiously motivated protests."It was unclear whether the ruling applied only to the church members or to everyone in Nebraska.
